Top Reasons to Visit State Parks

As you start planning your next trip, imagine having hundreds of affordable destinations to choose from. You don’t have to imagine it--that’s exactly what is available in America’s state parks. These parks attract visitors for a wide variety of reasons. Here are my top reasons to visit state parks.

1. Natural beauty for all

Many state parks rival the beauty that can be found within the national park system. High cliffs, grand waterfalls, old growth forests, deep blue lakes, rushing rivers and boulder-filled gorges are among the natural features awaiting visitors in state parks across the United States.

2. The gift of natural and cultural heritage

The understanding and appreciation of a rich heritage is a priceless gift that state parks offer visitors year after year. Each park visit is a vote for the continuing preservation of state treasures.

3. Location, location, location

Because state parks are scattered across the country, there are very few areas that don’t have access to a state park within a reasonable distance. As a result, it’s easy to take a day trip or a weekend getaway. With less planning, packing and stress, these parks make the perfect destination.

4. Recreation at little or no cost

Lots of parks offer low-cost or even free day use. In most instances, nominal fees apply to overnight camping. On average lodging within the parks costs less than similar accommodations outside parks. With a wide variety of activities available at most parks, this is an exceptional value. You get to enjoy the benefits from your state tax dollars.

5. Something for everyone

No matter what your interests are, you’ll find a state park that’s perfect for you. In state parks, visitors can enjoy magnificent landscapes, rivers and lakes, outdoor recreation or just laid-back rest and relaxation. Bird watching, rock climbing, back-country hiking and camping are all available in state parks.

6. The living past

Many state parks showcase local history, sometimes through re-enactment or period costuming, work and everyday life. Across the country hundreds of priceless historic sites and thousands of irreplaceable structures are protected within the boundaries of state parks.

7. Learning opportunities

Learning abounds in state parks. Such opportunities vary from park to park, depending up type and location. Parks with many geologic features will offer talks, guided tours and displays to help visitors learn about geology. Parks in remote locations might focus on stargazing and astronomy programs. Parks on the edge of wetlands or those with rich eco-systems may offer hikes that teach visitors about the environment and the plants and animals that it supports. Other parks have extensive programs that highlight the archaeology of the area.

Now, go have fun at a state park!
